Online poker terminology and slang

So you will start playing poker eh? Okay, go on, there’s a table in the room called Devil’s Hearth. This is when you start stuttering, things like “why does that room have a name like that?” First guess would be that they are a bunch of aggressive poker players who you just don’t want to mess with.

I would say that would be a rather wise decision on your part. Especially, if you don’t have any idea about the various terms and the slang used in the game of poker. I have to admit that learning poker slang is as good as learning a new foreign language of some kind, but hey, it isn’t as tough as it sounds you know. But if you think that it’s more than enough if you know all about poker by learning (it’s not even learning, it’s basic knowledge) terms like clubs, spades, hearts, diamonds and the strength of sign on the cards, that is, aces, kings, queens, jack, 1-10, well, you need a bit of help my friend.

Let’s start off with the easy part for now shall we. We start off with the pairs (that’s what you would call it). Now suppose you had two aces. We call them the Pocket Rockets. As for 2 kings, 2 queens and 2 jacks, we call them Cowboys/Elvis Presleys, The Ladies/The Dirty Duo and Jokers/Jerky Joes/Hooks respectively. Yeah, tell me about, some whacky names or what!!! Two 2s are known as Deuces or Ducks.

These names cannot help you a lot if you’re playing a hand of poker with the big guys. Besides, when you’re in the middle of an intense game, you’ll need to know some the poker terms a bit more effectively and not just the slang. The first term that you absolutely must know is the “flop”. The flop is nothing but the initial stage that involves the community cards in any game resembling the Texas hold ’em up kind of style.

The most common phrase that you might have come across is “he’s seeing the flop” which only means that the player (the he) is going to stay in the game. And then of course there’s the ever so popular phrase that goes something like this “he’s hitting the flop”. You should just see the smile on the player’s face when “the he” is no one else but him. This phrase means that the community cards that are on the table are going well together along with the hand of the player. This means that he is having a winning hand.

Then there are other terms known as Ante, which is like a forced bet that each player necessarily has to place. There is the Call in which the bet is either raised or matched. This could just go on because the poker vocabulary is a really vast one. So the bottom line is that before you go on to playing a hand of poker, it’s advised that you become familiar with all the slangs and terms of this game and never confuse poker with the kiddy game of Go fish.
